Look at these objects. What did people do before they were invented?

How do you think these objects will evolve over the next 10, 30 and even 100 years time?

Do you think they will all merge into one at some point in the future?

1. Glasses. How did people cope before the invention of glasses? Why doesn’t everyone use contact lenses nowadays? What will glasses be like in 10, 30 or even 100 years time? Will they still exist?

2. Phones. How did people communicate before the invention of phones? Does anyone still use land lines nowadays? What will phones be like in 10, 30 or even 100 years time? Will they still exist?

3. Fridges. How did people keep food fresh before the fridge was invented? Does anyone use fridges nowadays? What will we store food in 10, 30 or even 100 years time? Will food still exist?

4. Clothes. Did your grandparents have as many clothes (or shoes) as you? Does anyone not use clothes (or shoes) nowadays? What will clothes be like in 10, 30 or even 100 years time? Will they still exist?

5. Our bodies and minds. How long did people live hundreds of years ago? How long will we live in the future? Will our bodies and minds be the same in the future? Will they (and we) still exist?

iLook iThink iSpeak – express yourself better

Look at these pairs of pictures. Choose one pair and compare and contrast the pictures – How much would you pay for each object or event? Why would you pay more for one and less for another?

Discuss – Do you prefer to pay more money for more features? Is value for money important for you? Have you ever bought anything luxurious?

Write it all in an email to your ECP coach (and record your voice!).

Learning strategies – how reading (and Obama) can help you

3 QUICK TIPS

What you can read to help improve your English.

  • Books adapted to your level e.g. the Jane Austen and Mr. Bean books in picture 1.
  • Wikipedia – find information about something you are interested in on Wikipedia. Do this in your mother tongue and then click on ‘English’ in the languages column on the left.
  • Think about your hobbies. Find and read English websites about your hobbies.

Whenever possible try to read and listen to the text at the same time. You can do this with songs but perhaps the best way is to get a video of someone talking and at the same time get the script of what they say.

You can do this with many of Barack Obama’s speeches. If you go to www.whitehouse.gov and click on the briefing room section. Here you can find ‘Your Weekly Address‘ where you can watch Barack Obama speak on a weekly basis to the American people and at the same time you can download the video, the audio AND the transcript. Plenty of material for you ti use!
